The Art of Yoik

The increasing use of yoik in different contexts and with different styles of music is a positive trend that has led to interesting new yoik-inspired music. At the same time, it is important to ensure that the roots are not forgotten and that the traditional yoik survives. We have observed that the yoik is being used less and less in everyday life also in Sápmi. Therefore, our aim is to produce a film which procures information about traditional yoiking and facilitates the access to the genuine tradition. The film will convey the basics of North Sámi yoik-art (the circle movements, the pentatonic scale, the mixed rhythms, the role of emotion, the direct link to nature, spirituality and people, etc.). It is also meant to help recognize the difference between yoik and other music, increase the popularity of yoik, and spread knowledge of yoik.
